Notes:  HE.  Holl is mentioned in this letter and the one written
the  next  day.  There  was  in fact a Heinrich  Holl  listed  in
"Germans to America",  who arrived in NY from Bremen on 1/23/1857
on  the  ship North America.  He was 58,  a peasant  from  Hesse,
destination Buffalo.  With him was his daughter Elisabeth, 16. He
left   on the  11th of March,  and the Atlantic crossing couldn't
have taken him all the way to next year, and it's hard to imagine
that the  trip down  the   river from  Hesse to Bremen would have
taken more  than a   few  days,   so  maybe he spent some time in
Bremen before he left, or maybe he made more than one trip.
     Anton  mentions  the the road from Bebra  to  Cornberg  thru
Asmushausen.  Cornberg is right next to Rockensuess,  about 10 Km
northeast of Bebra.  Then he says how their old house,  barn, and
stable,  plus his brother-in-law's house, had been torn down as a
part  of the beautification project.  This all implies that  they
probably grew up on a farm near Asmushausen.
     He  also says that the prices of most things were going  up,
but  the prices of houses were dropping.  Maybe the inflation was
so  bad  that it caused enough people to leave that it  hurt  the
housing market. I'm assuming Rthle stands for Reichsthaler. Felix
G. Game, who helped translate this letter, says a Malter is 19.74
bushels, and a  Klafter is  about 3  cubic meters,  which means a
bit less than a cord of wood (a cord is 4 X 4 X 8 feet ). He also
suspects that 14 Thaler (a Thaler was about like a silver dollar)
probably would have bought more than 12 bushels of grain.
     Augusta,  the  older daughter of his second wife,  was 10 in
1856, and   Eduard,  who was  the son of his  first wife, was 15;
this is compatible with the 1845 date for his second marriage.
     On p.  4 where  he talks about whether Eduard wanted to be a
farmer, the  word Oeconomie  can be  translated as  farming, land
management, or economics.
