To Fred: From: Ray July 8, 2000
I am in contact with brothers, Richard Gene (Rick) & Donald Mark
Duthe and sister, Bonnie Lou Duthe. I have a copy of their
genealogy report from Sept. of 1994. Their Mother lives in
Tonowanda, N.Y., Donald lives in Stafford, N.Y., Rick lives in
Franklin, Massachussets and sister Bonnie lives in Tonowanda, NY.
I called Rick on the evening of July 7, 2000 and asked him if he
ever found any more info on his family from Hesse, Germany. He
replied - no. He was in hurry because they were leaving on
vacation and won't be back until July 24. Rick is doing his
family genealogy.
Donald's (school teacher - no less) address is: 9013 Roanoke
Road, Stafford, N.Y., 14143, phone: (somewhere in my mess). Rick
also said that their older members of the family were not
sociable and he doesn't have all the members of the family that
are out there in that area of N.Y.
Their family starts with:
Wilhelm Johannes Duthe
D.O.B.: about 1815 (not sure), Hesse, Germany
D.O.D.: August 26, 1849, Buffalo, N.Y.
Naturalized: Oct. 7, 1843, Buffalo, N.Y. (probate court, Buffalo,
Erie County, N.Y.)
Married: about 1838 to Katharina (Unknown) in Germany (3 children
to this marriage)
Katharina (Unknown)
D.O.B. : about 1818, Germany
D.O.D.: about 1860, Buffalo, N.Y.
Remarried about 1850 to Henry Stetzel in Buffalo, N.Y.
(she had three more children with this marriage - not documented)
Children of Wilhelm & Katherina:
1) John Duthe
D.O.B.: March 1839, Hesse, Germany

Oakwood Cem., Niagara Falls, No Marker)
Married: about 1862 to Louisa Catherine Bauer (4 children),
Buffalo, N.Y.
wife D.O.B.: June 19, 1844, Buffalo, N.Y. wife D.O.D.: July 29,

children), Buffalo, N.Y.
I have all of the the rest of the family. I will scan it in
later and send it to you if you want it.
I have also talked to and went to their home in St. Pete.,
Fla., Clayton and Esther (Hudson) Dute. Their small home had
shutters with large green letter "D" on each shutter. He died
Dec. 9, 1970 (about 78 yrs. old) in St. Pete. Esther was his
second wife. She didn't know anymore about the family
than what I have here. Clayton was born in Avis, Pennsylvania.
His first wife (unkown) died (3 children). He has a
daughter Cynthia Ayleff in Crystal Beach, Ontario, Canada, and
Lenna Klein in Pompano Beach, Florida. He had one son killed in
WWII. He had two sisters living in Phillie, Nellie Layman and
Elsie Herkroth. He has a grandson, Kenneth Klein that lives at
Merritt Island, Florida. Clayton worked for the D.L. & W.
Railroad in Pennsylvania. Clayton and Esther moved to St. Pete.
in 1952. After seeing Esther in Florida, I had the feeling that
they were the Dute's that have come from England/Scotland.
The other Duty's that I know and have talked to came through
Virginia from England/Scotland. They seem to be like the
"hillbillies" that we know of from the south.
The Charles O. Dute family below is from the line of George
Dute who lived in Russia Twp. See Casper Dute's record (#58).
By cousin, Robert Albert Dute (born in 1939), lives in Las
Vegas since the 1960's. Karen Lewis grandfather, Robert Albert
Dute was the one I talked to in Florida. Looking through my
notes on Robert (from Florida) he was born in 1910. His father
was Charles O. Dute (Apr. 29, 1895 to Nov. 1967) and mother was
(Unkown) Shrader (I am not sure of this spelling - although he
tried to spell it for me). He had three daughters, one passed
away, one lives in Arlington, Va. and Karen's mother is in North
Carolina. He wanted to talk about his cousins, Dr. Edward
Schrader of Cleveland and DDS. Richard Schrader of Columbus (I
suspect his cousins are now gone-although he didn't indicate
that).
I have a newspaper clipping from 1988, Elyria Chronicle-
Telegram, for Esther C. Dute (nee Bringman). She was 95 years
old and died (Dec. 16, 1988) at her residence (I believe it was
at Russia Township - south of Elyria). Born in Brownhelm
Township on July 29, 1893 and life long residence. Member of the
Zion United Methodist Church. Survivors include her lifelong
friend, who took care of her for 60 years, Mary Walcho of Russia
Township. Several nieces and nephews. She was preceeded in
death by her husband, Charles in 1976 (almost bet that this date
should have been 1967); a daughter, Gertrude; and six brothers
and sisters. Buried in Brownhelm Cemetery.
From Social Security records (that I can't put together):
Adam Dute with Dec. 25, 1883 to Sep. 1976 at Elyria.
Amelia Dute with Sep. 30, 1886 to Sep. 1978 at Amherst.
Charles Dute with Apr. 29, 1885 to Nov. 1967 at Oberlin. (See above.)
plus twenty others from Pennsylvania, one from New Jersey, one
from Grand Forks, North Dakota (issued in Illinois), one from
Missouri, one from Savannah, Georgia (issued in Pa.) and two from
Florida (both issued in Pa.).
Cemetery Markers that I know of (that I can't put together):
Birmingham Cem., Birmingham, Ohio:
Adam Dute with 1846 to 1940
next to Adam's grave
Anna Martha with 1851 to 1913
The next three are from Martin Dute's line (see record #400):
Cleveland Street Cem., Amherst, Ohio:
Margaret Helena (Moeller) Dute with 1847 to 1918
next to Helena's grave
Lydia Dute with Apr. 12, 1888 to Mar. 1972
and also
Kathryn Dute with Feb. 10, 1881 to July 1972
I work with a fellow that remembers this two spinsters and their
saturday morning trips to town for groceries. I can't remember
know which one of these two used to work at a doctors office in
Amherst. Did you know that their 1847 sandstone house was moved
to the Amherst Historical Museum (next to the Quigley Museum of
Valerie fame). (Valerie says it's actually diagonally across
the street.) I have two copies of the move from the newspaper
article. I suspect that this Dute family was the one that was hung
in Amherst (no husband or father). (Valerie says this was in
Wellington or Russia Twp., not Amherst.)
George Dute with 1844 to 1899
next to George's grave
Elizabeth Dute with 1856 to 1876
and also
Mary Dute with 1855 to 1942
Martin Dute with 52 JULYren. 10 m.26 C to June 9, 1865
next to Martin's grave
Anna Dute with 1814 to 1899
Here are some other Dutes that Valerie found, the first two in Salt Lake
at the Mormon Library:
Michael Dute 1850 Census Marion County, OH
Frederich dute 1850 Pennsylvania -- Pine TWP.
